studentatlaw.co.uk - a career as a solicitor - your personality

Needless to say, your personality will effect how well you get along in a firm, and therefore it should effect which type of firms you apply to.  Consider the following points:

  • Different skills are needed working in a big office or a small office, just as different skills are needed depending on what your duties will be.  Think about whether these duties will match your skills.
  • Think about your hobbies, why you like them, how dedicated you are.  Your hobbies will tell a firm a lot about you. i.e. if you are involved team activities, this shows that you have certain interfacing skills.  If you participate in sports, did you win anything?  If you did martial arts, did you every have to teach a beginner.  These are all skills that can be applied directly to your job and show your practical development of these skills.

personality

  • Consider what each of your part time jobs have demonstrated to you, if you worked late at night while studying, this shows that you have the ability to work long hours, if you worked behind a bar this shows interfacing skills.
  • Don’t rule out your degree experience.  Many modern degrees involve large amounts of research and teamwork, these are valuable skills in the legal environment.
