Stage 2

So far you know all about you and the type of firm you would like to join. Now you're ready to find out what firms these are.

Make a list of all the firms that match your previous analysis.  A good place to start this is www.lawcareers.net. Please see the legal links section for more useful links to help you with this.

Once you have made a shortlist of the firms you might like to joice, you should decide how to spend your time when applying.  For most people, the choice is whether or not you are going to send many applications or tailor a specific few.  Both have advantages and this is more of a personal choice than anything else, but remember, the person reading your application might be reading 100 others which are tailored to that firm.

Whichever decision you make, decide which firms from your list are most suitable for a first round of applications and concentrate on these.

My personal recommendation is to pick a few which require a CV and covering letter first and work on these.  The information from the CV and covering letter is useful for the application forms which other firms use.  This way, you can apply to a few firms and have a good CV at the same time, which is always a good idea.

When applying, why not use studentatlaw's Legal Job Applications Manager. This is free to download in our download section.
