Firm Description

Barlow Lyde & Gilbert LLP is a leading international legal practice with more than 80 partners and over 300 lawyers. The firm has offices in the City of London and Singapore, and affiliated undertakings in Hong Kong and Shanghai. We provide an extensive range of legal services to clients from many industries across the world, and are renowned for our litigation and insurance expertise. Our dispute resolution practice is one of the UK's largest and highest rated. Our experience is wide-ranging, from complex boardroom or IT disputes to professional negligence actions and major reinsurance arbitrations. The firm scooped “Litigation Team of the Year” at the Legal Week Awards in 2005, and again at both The Lawyer Awards and the Legal Business Awards in 2006. Our top-ranked insurance and reinsurance practice is one of the largest in the world, providing services of unparalleled breadth across the sector. The firm was ranked 'best in Europe' in the 'Reactions' 2007 annual legal survey of over 100 in-house counsel, top executives and claim handlers at insurers, reinsurers and brokers. Our lawyers are also leaders in international transport and trade sectors. The firm has significant experience representing and advising some of the world’s major players in the aerospace and marine, energy and trade fields, including airlines, ship owners, charterers, manufacturers, airports, insurers, regulatory agencies and international trade associations. Our non-contentious department handles the full spectrum of corporate, financial, commercial and employment and pensions work for public and private companies from a wide range of sectors as well as financial institutions.

Trainee Skills
We look for intelligent and motivated graduates with good academic qualifications and excellent communication skills. Trainees must be able to work independently or in a team, and are expected to display common sense and initiative. An appreciation of the client’s commercial interests is essential.

Qualifications
About 40% of our intake is from a non-law background. As we only recruit 18-20 trainees each year, competition for places is extremely fierce. We look for intelligent, motivated people with strong academic qualifications. This means that we expect a minimum of 320 UCAS points and predicted/achieved good upper second or first honours law or non-law degree, though we will take into account mitigating circumstances.

Training Contract Interview Days & Vacation Schemes
We currently host 3 vacation schemes each summer, which are aimed at second-year law and final-year non-law undergraduates. Over a fortnight, you will sit within a department and sample firsthand the practical day-to-day workings of a busy City law firm, as well as take part in the firm’s assessment process and enjoy a few social excursions.

The interview day takes place after the vacation schemes, and is a one day assessment centre with training contract interview, where you are also given the opportunity to learn about the firm and have a tour of the building. Dependent on the number of offers we make, we sometimes host a second interview day.

How to apply
If you wish to apply for a place on our summer 2008 vacation schemes or for the interview day in autumn 2008, then you will need to complete our online application form, found on our website. The deadline for the vacation scheme is 31 January 2008, whilst the interview day’s closing date is 31 August 2008.
