studentatlaw.co.uk - what is the GDL?

The GDL (Graduate Diploma In Law) is compulsory for those who have completed an undergraduate degree in a non-law subject and who now wish to become a solicitor or barrister. It is the first legal qualification a student will take. Because the GDL allows a student to change career from one career path to another, it is often known as ‘the law conversion course’.

The purpose of the GDL is to provide a basic academic background to the main areas of law. The GDL is designed to impart a theoretical knowledge upon which all future practical work will be built.

It is considered to be both a grounding in, and an introduction to legal knowledge. For this reason, it is the first course that both a potential solicitor and a barrister must take when coming from another discipline.

 GDL

The areas of law which will generally be studied in the GDL are:

  1. Constitutional/ Administrative Law
  2. Tort Law
  3. Contract Law
  4. Land Law
  5. Criminal Law
  6. Trusts and Equity
  7. European Law
