studentatlaw.co.uk - where can I study the GDL? |
Does it matter where I am studying the GDL?
Generally, the majority of firms do not state a preference for which university they would like their trainees to study the GDL. However, some large firms may only send a student whom they are sponsoring to one particular university for the LPC. Firms which do this do not usually have the same requirements for the study of the GDL, however, you are strongly advised to check this well in advance with those firms which you wish to apply to.
When looking at which course to pick I personally considered many different factors and include as a guide, the following:
- Studying in the city you wish to work in can be useful in terms of gaining an idea of the different law firms which surround that area. It also provides an opportunity to visit the law firms you wish to apply to, should the opportunity permit. In addition, many law firms will ask what connection you have to the area in which the firm's training contract is based. Living and studying in the area (particularly for those wishing to take a training contract outside of London) provides an obvious connection.
- Universities will usually have a careers service, some possibly better than others, especially for your particular needs. Factors to look at are: which speakers came to which universities, how personal the attention given to you will be when applying as well as what services the careers service provide (i.e. helping draft your applications, practice interviews etc).
- Quality of teaching – this can often be the subject of personal opinion – ask the university if you can come up for an open day, visit their facilities, attend a lecture if possible.
- Costs are obviously a factor. The costs of the GDL can vary greatly. Making sure that the course is right for you should be emphasised ahead of cost if possible.
- A university’s links to industry can be important, though possibly more so for the LPC than the GDL
- Although written skills are essential wherever the GDL is taken, different institutions teaching styles can differ greatly. For example, The College of Law has a reputation for being far less essay based and a little more academic than BPP. So you should choose a course which will suit your skills
