studentatlaw.co.uk - part time or full time |
The road to becoming a fully qualified solicitor can be long. For this reason many people take the GDL course full time. In the normal course of events, qualifying as a solicitor through a conversion course studying full time will take four years. Taking the GDL part time will extend this to five years.
If you wish to study the GDL part time, then it is important that you use the rest of your time well so that when you begin looking for a training contract you will be a more competitive candidate. For instance, many employers respect practical experience in the legal field, or experience in the area in which you might wish to practice, as well as academic excellence.
Practical experience which demonstrates certain skills such as business acumen, interfacing skills etc can also be of great benefit to you. Training contract places are highly competitive and any extra advantage you can gain could help you obtain a training contract.
