One thing seriously worth considering when thinking of a legal career is specialism. Being a conveyancer is a completely different job from being a corporate lawyer, they are literally like the difference between being a teacher and an insurance broker.
Another reason for seriously copnsidering what type of lawyer you might want to be is the sheer difficulty of moving to one type of specialism to another post qualification. Certainly, in the bigger law firms, once you get past perhaps a couple of years post qualified, it can be very difficult to switch to another department.
Perhaps most importantly of all, especially when it comes to smaller firms, is the increasing need to find a real niche. Whilst you might find property law interesting, be aware that there are so many conveyancers out there now it is ultra competitive on price and very difficult to differentiate. even within topics, there can be specialisation. For example, employment law is a very big area, so you might market yourself as a specialist in discrimination law or such like. Other law areas are growing fast, such as specialisations, for example, in data protection law or e-commerce. If you are not wedded to one area, try to think of where the growth areas are and find a specialisation, go on courses, write about your topic and try to develop an overall reputation as a genuine expert.
