As previously mentioned, in the United States, law is a postgraduate subject. A student who wishes to qualify as an attorney must therefore have an undergraduate degree before taking a full time 3 year US law degree. Any undergraduate subject should be enough to obtain a qualifying undergraduate degree, but please check with the relevant bar association before embarking on any course of action.
For students who have obtained an undergraduate degree, the study of law can now begin. Legal study in the United States follows two paths. One is a Juris Doctorate Program (JD) which is a 3 year long postgraduate course. The second method is via an LLM which is a masters degree and lasts one year.
For those who are already qualified as a UK solicitor (or who have an undergraduate law degree from the UK – applicable for some states only) the LLM is the usual route towards becoming an attorney. For those who have taken a non-law undergraduate degree and who now wish to qualify as an attorney, the JD program is the route which you might be most likely to follow.
